license your art

Your art: for sale or rent?

I just sat down to write an article for another artist to use for her eZine… the first question is this:

What is art licensing?

Well, I know the answer.  But I wanted a simple definition, so like I am apt to do, I headed to Google and typed in: Art Licensing Definition.

Then I went and read this great article that really explains it, here it is in a nutshell:

Think of an assignment like the sale of a house and a license like a rental. In an assignment, you usually give up all ownership rights to your art. In a license, you temporarily transfer your rights but you retain ownership of the art.

It’s from nolo.com – a great resource for legal info.

It goes into some of the issues of contracts too so I recommend anyone wanting to know what licensing is or wanting to make sure they understand the legal terms, go check it out!

P.S.  Personally, I try to rent whenever possible but there are times where accepting an offer to buy can be good for your bottom line.  Consider the art, the time it took and your cash flow needs.

Who else wants to earn a living while painting in their pajamas?

Earn an income doing what you love – I can teach you how. (soon)

I just got back from an Internet marketing workshop with gurus Pat O’Bryan and Craig Perinne in San Antonio. I went thinking I wanted to develop some online art-related products to help with my branding and create another income stream.

When it was my time to tell my story, I quickly discovered that there was more interest in the licensing side of what I do instead of the products I could create. Other people in the group wanted to learn how to earn multiple streams of income from their artwork—basically, what licensing is and how to get started.

Using my marketing background and experience, I’m going to do a few eBooks that will put the basics in one place.
